Dhaka, Sep 22 (V7N)- The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast rain and thundershowers across various parts of the country over the next five days as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may intensify further.
According to the 120-hour weather forecast issued from 9:00am on Tuesday (September 22), moderate to very heavy rainfall is likely in some areas, while daytime temperatures may fall slightly.
The department said a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and intensified. By 6:00am Tuesday, it had developed into a low-pressure system and was located over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.
The system may intensify into a deep depression within the next 12 hours, the weather department said.
Meanwhile, the axis of the monsoon trough extends from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal through central Bangladesh to Assam. The southwest monsoon remains moderately active over Bangladesh and strong over the northern Bay of Bengal.
On Tuesday, light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds may occur at some places in the Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Rajshahi divisions. Rain is also possible at one or two places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
The mild heatwave affecting Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and several districts, including Dhaka, Tangail, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Kishoreganj, Narayanganj, Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajganj, Khulna, Jashore and Chuadanga, may ease in some areas. Day and night temperatures are also expected to fall slightly across the country.
Rainfall activity is expected to increase from Wednesday (September 23). Many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and some areas of Mymensingh, Dhaka and Sylhet divisions may experience rain or thundershowers with gusty winds. Moderate to very heavy rainfall is possible at some locations.
Similar conditions are forecast for Thursday (September 24), with rain likely in many areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and some areas of Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet.
On Friday (September 25), rain is expected in many areas of Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions and at some places in other divisions. Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur at isolated locations in Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal.
On Saturday (September 26), light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds may affect some areas of all eight divisions. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also possible in some places.
The Meteorological Department said the overall trend of rain and thundershowers across the country may gradually decrease after the five-day period.
