Dhaka, Sep 13 (V7N)- The country is set to experience relief from the recent intense heat as the weather office forecasts heavy rainfall over the weekend. According to a statement released on Friday by meteorologist Omar Farooq, there is a possibility of significant rainfall until Sunday, which will help reduce the prevailing heatwave. However, with this forecast comes the concern of potential flooding in low-lying areas of the Chittagong Division.

A low-pressure system has formed over the southeast of Bangladesh and the adjacent northeast Bay of Bengal, which is expected to trigger widespread rain across the country. The weather office predicts that during the next 24 hours, most areas in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong divisions, along with parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, will experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds.

By Saturday, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in many parts of the country, which may lead to a 2 to 3-degree Celsius drop in both day and night temperatures. However, by Sunday, while rain will continue in most parts of the country, temperatures may rise slightly.

There is a particular concern for low-lying areas in Chittagong Division. Meteorologists have warned of potential flooding in districts such as Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Khagrachari, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, and Laxmipur due to the anticipated rise in river water levels driven by heavy rainfall in the country and upstream regions. Fortunately, water levels in rivers in Barisal and Khulna divisions remain stable, with no immediate threat of flooding.

The heavy rainfall offers a much-needed break from the oppressive heat, but authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert for possible flooding over the weekend.
