Dhaka, Oct 27 (V7N)— The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court has ordered the imprisonment of Syed Sayedul Haque, known as Barrister Sumon, following a five-day remand in an attempted murder case filed at Mirpur Model Police Station.

On Sunday morning, Magistrate Sefatullah presided over the hearing, rejecting the bail plea put forth by Sumon’s legal team. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court accepted the prosecution’s request to deny bail and ordered Sumon to be sent to prison.

The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Abdul Halim of Mirpur Model Police Station, requested the court to remand Sumon in jail, citing the need to ensure legal proceedings continue smoothly.

Barrister Sumon was arrested from Mirpur-6 on October 21 in connection with the attempted murder of Hriday Mia, a Jubo Dal leader and assistant cook at Bangaliana Bhoj restaurant in Mirpur. The court subsequently granted a five-day remand for questioning.

According to the case details, Hriday Mia was injured during an anti-discrimination rally at Mirpur-10 on July 19. The rally, which followed Friday prayers, was disrupted by an attack allegedly involving Awami League affiliates. Hriday was shot in the heart during the incident and later filed the case at Mirpur Model Police Station on September 23, naming Barrister Sumon as the third accused.

Hriday Mia serves as the senior vice-president of the Hatiain Union Jubo Dal No. 10 in Madhavpur, Habiganj.

Barrister Sumon, previously a Member of Parliament representing the Habiganj-4 constituency, had contested the 12th National Parliamentary Election as an independent candidate. Although initially seeking the Awami League’s nomination, he ran independently after being denied the party ticket and defeated Mahbub Ali, the former State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism.
