Dhaka, Nov 06 (V7N)— Barrister M Qayyum, a prominent lawyer of the Supreme Court, has issued a legal notice to the government, urging the immediate cancellation or revision of power contracts with India's Adani Group. The notice, sent through the Supreme Court Registrar on Wednesday morning, calls these contracts "unfair and unilateral," raising concerns over the terms and conditions.
According to Barrister Qayyum, the notice demands the formation of a review committee comprised of energy and legal experts to scrutinize the agreements thoroughly. The lawyer also mentioned that he would file a writ in the High Court if the government does not initiate a review process within the next three days.
The Power Development Board (PDB) chairman and the secretary of the Ministry of Energy have been given until November 9 to respond to the notice. The proposed review committee would be expected to provide a comprehensive report detailing the contract terms, their implications, and recommendations.
This legal challenge comes amid growing public concern over foreign energy contracts and their impact on Bangladesh’s energy sector. Barrister Qayyum’s move could signal the beginning of heightened scrutiny on energy deals that affect national interests.
