Dhaka, Nov 20 (V7N)- Eight high-ranking former army and police officials have been presented before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to face charges of genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the student-led mass uprising in July and August of this year.

The individuals brought before the ICT include:
1. Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun - Former Inspector General of Police
2. Major General (Retd.) Ziaul Ahsan - Former Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC)
3. Md. Abdullah Al Kafi - Former Superintendent of Police, Dhaka District
4. Md. Jasim Uddin Molla - Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mirpur, DMP
5. Md. Shahidur Islam - Former Additional Superintendent of Police, Dhaka
6. Abul Hasan - Former Officer-in-Charge (OC), Jatrabari Police Station
7. Mazharul Haque - Former OC, Gulshan Police Station
8. Md. Arafat Hossain - Former Detective Branch (DB) Inspector, Dhaka North

The accused face allegations of ordering excessive use of force, including live firing, to suppress peaceful protests during the uprising. The incidents resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, fueling public outrage. Additionally, the accused are implicated in related murder and attempted murder cases.

The accused officials reportedly went into hiding following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5. They were apprehended at different times and have now been formally presented to the ICT for trial.

The ICT has initiated the legal process, and a detailed hearing on the charges will follow. If found guilty, the accused could face severe penalties under international and domestic laws governing crimes against humanity.

This case marks a significant development in holding accountable those accused of perpetrating violence during one of the country’s most turbulent periods in recent history.
