Dhaka, Apr 23 (V7N)— A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against prominent actress and producer Meher Afroz Shawon in connection with a case alleging physical abuse of her father and stepmother.

The Dhaka Metropolitan First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court passed the order on Tuesday, but it became public the following day. The case, which includes 12 accused individuals, also names former Detective Branch chief Mohammad Harun-ur-Rashid.

According to court sources, the case was filed by Nishi Islam, who married Shawon’s father, Engineer Mohammad Ali, last year after responding to a matrimonial advertisement. Following the marriage, Shawon allegedly became hostile and subjected the couple to repeated physical and mental abuse.

Two policemen from Badda Police Station, who appeared before the court, admitted their involvement, stating that they acted under orders from their then-officer-in-charge. However, the court issued arrest warrants for those who failed to appear, including Shawon and former DB chief Harun.

Nishi Islam claims Shawon used his influence to falsely detain and torture them, and even had her jailed for six months due to her affiliation with Awami League politics. She also alleges that Shawon declared his father mentally unstable and forcibly admitted him to a mental health facility.

Speaking to the press, Nishi expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, saying, "We want justice. Shawon used his influence to ruin our lives. He beat us up, used power and connections, but now the truth is coming out."

Further developments in this high-profile case are expected as law enforcement moves to enforce the court's warrant.
