Chittagong, May 05 (V7N) – A Chittagong court has ordered the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote, in connection with the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.

The arrest warrant was issued by Chittagong’s 6th Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin on Monday (May 5) following a hearing on the police’s application to show Chinmoy arrested in the murder case.

Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury confirmed the development to the media, stating, “Police had applied to show Chinmoy Krishna Das arrested in the Alif murder case, and the court has granted the petition.”

Due to security concerns, Chinmoy was not physically produced in court. Instead, he was connected via a virtual hearing from jail, according to the APP.

Background

On Sunday, police sought permission to show Chinmoy arrested in four separate cases:

  • the murder of lawyer Alif,

  • obstruction of police duty,

  • attacks on lawyers, and

  • assaults on trial seekers.

The hearing for the murder case was completed on Monday, while hearings for the remaining three cases are scheduled for Tuesday (May 6).

Chinmoy Krishna Das, an expelled ISKCON organizer and the spokesperson of the Sanatani Jagran Jote, was previously arrested on November 25 last year from Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport by the Intelligence Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in a sedition case filed at Chittagong’s Kotwali Police Station. The following day, the Chittagong court denied his bail and sent him to jail.

The rejection of his bail triggered clashes in the court premises involving his followers. Later that day, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was brutally attacked and killed nearby. Following the murder, Alif’s father, Jamal Uddin, filed a case naming 31 individuals allegedly involved in the killing.

The investigation into the high-profile murder and associated unrest remains ongoing, with Chinmoy Krishna Das now formally included as an accused in the murder case.
