Dhaka, Oct 13 (V7N) — Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT), Tajul Islam, has said that if army personnel currently in military custody are shown as arrested, they must be produced before the court. The tribunal will then decide whether to send them to a sub-jail or another prison.
He made these remarks on Monday (October 13) in response to the government’s recent notification declaring a building inside Dhaka Cantonment as a temporary sub-jail.
Tajul Islam stated, “The government has the authority to designate any facility as a prison. However, according to tribunal law, any accused person shown arrested must be presented before the court within 24 hours.”
The interim government recently issued a notification declaring ‘MES’ Building No. 54, located on the north side of Bashar Road in Dhaka Cantonment, as a temporary prison. The directive, issued by the Security Services Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs on October 12, came into effect immediately.
The announcement coincides with reports that 15 army officers, against whom arrest warrants were previously issued by the International Criminal Tribunal, have been taken into military custody.
