Gazipur, Apr 13 (V7N) – Baul artist Abul Sarkar, who had been imprisoned on charges of insulting religion and blasphemy, has been released on bail from Kashimpur Central Jail-2.
He was released on Monday morning after his bail documents were verified by the jail authorities.
Senior Jail Superintendent Halima Khatun confirmed that the bail papers reached the jail on Sunday and were processed accordingly. She added that Sarkar was released as there were no other pending cases against him.
According to his lawyer Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, the High Court granted Abul Sarkar interim bail for six months on April 5. The bench, comprising Justice Md. Atwar Rahman and Justice Md. Sagir Hossain, approved the bail after hearing his petition.
Abul Sarkar was arrested on November 20 last year following allegations that he made blasphemous remarks during a Palagan performance in the Jabra area of Ghior, Manikganj. A video of the incident later went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism. He was subsequently detained by Detective Branch (DB) police from a musical event in Madaripur and sent to jail through a court order.
