Habiganj, Sept 30 (V7N) – Madhabpur Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Maitree Roy has fined two people a total of Tk 4 lakh in separate drives against illegal extraction and transportation of sand and soil within two working days of taking charge.
The two operations were conducted on Monday and Tuesday in different parts of Madhabpur, with a tractor carrying sand also seized during one of the drives.
On Monday afternoon, September 28, a mobile court led by Maitree Roy conducted a drive in Mangalpur village of Choumuhani Union and seized a tractor loaded with sand.
Faruk Mia, son of Ahid Mia of Sabaspur village in Brahmanbaria district, was fined Tk 50,000 under the Sand and Soil Management Act, 2010.
On Tuesday afternoon, September 29, another drive was conducted in the Mahmudpur area of Bulla Union against the illegal extraction of soil.
Sajid Mia, 55, son of late Rashid Ali of Baneshwar village, was fined Tk 3.5 lakh under the same law. The fine was subsequently collected.
A total of Tk 4 lakh was collected in fines during the two separate operations.
Maitree Roy, who led the drives, said the upazila administration would continue taking action against the illegal extraction, storage and transportation of sand and soil.
“Legal action will be taken against anyone involved in such activities in violation of the law,” she said.
Her immediate action against illegal sand and soil extraction after assuming office has drawn attention locally, with residents welcoming increased enforcement against activities that can cause environmental and land-management problems.
