"HC bench passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by environmentalists and animal rights organisations"

In a ruling, the High Court questioned why it should not be illegal for the government to do nothing about lanterns and fireworks.

The ruling was approved on Sunday January 21, by the High Court panel consisting of Justices Mustafa Zaman Islam and Md. Atabullah.

Seven individuals have been asked to react to the regulation within four weeks. These individuals include the inspector general of police, the commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and the secretaries of the home ministry, the Energy and Minerals Resources Division, and the ministry of fisheries and livestock.

Following the hearing of a writ petition submitted by environmentalists and animal rights organizations, the HC bench issued the ruling.

Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, an advocate, represented the writ petitioners. Barrister Sheikh Rubaiyat Islam was with him. The state was represented by Assistant Attorney General Selim Azad and Deputy Attorney General Tushar Kanti Roy.

A writ petition was filed with the High Court earlier on January 11 by the environmentalist and animal rights organization Save the Nature of Bangladesh, the Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS), and the human rights organization Gono Adhikar Foundation. The petition sought appropriate legal action and the government's effective role in regulating lanterns and fireworks.
