Rangpur, Sep 10 (V7N) – A Rangpur court has granted a four-day remand for Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Ali and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy, the primary suspects in the shooting death of Abu Saeed, a student from Begum Rokeya University. The ruling was delivered by Judge Asaduzzaman of Rangpur Metropolitan Tajhat Magistrate Amli Court-2 on Tuesday morning.

The two officers were brought to court at around 9:00 a.m. under heavy police and military security. Investigating officer, Police Superintendent Zakir Hossain of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), requested a five-day remand to further investigate their involvement in the killing. However, after a hearing, the court approved a four-day remand and directed the police to adhere to the Supreme Court's guidelines for remand procedures.

Abu Saeed, a 25-year-old student in the 12th batch of the English department at Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead on July 16, 2024. The incident took place in front of the university, during a protest where Saeed was reportedly unarmed. The video of the shooting went viral, sparking outrage and protests across Bangladesh.

According to the case filed by Saeed's elder brother, Ramzan Ali, the victim was one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur. The complaint claims that the shooting was premeditated, with the police officers involved in the fatal shooting acting on orders. It is alleged that when Saeed advanced toward the officers with his hands outstretched during the protest, he was shot despite posing no threat.

The incident occurred when members of the Chhatra League, led by Begum Rokeya University branch president Pomel Barua, reportedly threw bricks at protesting students. Abu Saeed was allegedly trying to de-escalate the situation when he was shot.

The killing has reignited the quota reform movement, and nationwide protests have ensued, leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, amidst mounting pressure from students.

The court’s decision to remand the two accused officers is expected to provide further insights into the planning and execution of the killing. The investigation is ongoing, with demands for accountability growing across the country.
