Dhaka, Mar 28 (V7N) -Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a specialized police unit, has filed a sedition case against 73 individuals, including former prime minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, in connection with an online meeting where plans for a civil war and a conspiracy to overthrow the current government were discussed.

An official of the CID filed the case before a Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday under the Code of Criminal Procedure, Case No CR 222/2025, with charges including sedition under sections 121, 121A, 124A, and 34 of the Penal Code, said Special Super (SS) of the CID Media Wing Jasim Uddin Khan on Thursday evening.

Dr Rabbi Alam, the vice president of the United States Awami League, was named as the accused number 2 in the case. Besides, 503 other individuals who participated in the meeting have also been named as defendants in the case.

According to the plaintiff's statement, intelligence reports revealed that during the online meeting held on December 19 last year, a platform called "Joy Bangla Brigade" was created with the objective of reinstating Sheikh Hasina as prime minister through a civil war. Participants expressed their commitment to continue fighting until the goal was achieved.

A total of 577 individuals, from both domestic and international locations, took part in the Zoom meeting and unanimously expressed their intention to follow Sheikh Hasina's orders.

The voice recordings of the conversation, hosted by Dr Rabbi Alam, revealed that participants, both inside and outside the country, discussed not allowing the legitimate government to govern the country peacefully. The meeting also included plans for a civil war and conspiracy to overthrow the current government, which led to the filing of the sedition case.

After reviewing the details, including the recorded conversations, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka took the case into consideration and ordered the CID to investigate the matter. The case has been registered under the Code of Criminal Procedure, Case No. CR 222/2025, with charges including sedition under sections 121, 121A, 124A, and 34 of the Penal Code.
