Rangamati, Sept 03 (V7N) — Nine people, including women, have been detained on suspicion of being Rohingya during a joint forces operation at Mainimukh Bazar in Langadu upazila of Rangamati on Wednesday morning.
According to law enforcement sources, a group of 12 people hired a speedboat in Rangamati and travelled to Langadu before taking up a position at Mainimukh Bazar.
Acting on a tip-off, members of the law enforcement agencies conducted an operation at the market and detained nine of them. Three others reportedly managed to leave the area before the operation was completed.
Of the nine detainees, five reportedly admitted that they had left Rohingya camps in Ukhia and Teknaf and identified themselves as Rohingya.
The remaining four claimed to be Bangladeshi citizens. However, due to doubts surrounding their identities and movements, all nine were taken into the custody of Langadu Police Station for verification.
Langadu Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Swarajit De said the identities and backgrounds of the detainees were being verified.
“Legal action is being prepared based on the findings of the verification process,” he said.
Law enforcement agencies are also investigating why the group travelled to Langadu, what they intended to do there and the identities of the three people who reportedly left the scene.
