Habiganj, Jan 20, (V7N) - Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB) has destroyed drugs worth Tk 7.5 crore. The destruction took place at the 55 BGB headquarters in Habiganj at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
 
According to Lieutenant Colonel Md. Tanzilur Rahman, the commanding officer of Habiganj Battalion (55 BGB), the drugs were seized between July 26, 2022, and December 31, 2024, from various areas under their jurisdiction, including the Chunarughat and Madhabpur upazilas of Habiganj district and the Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar district. The total value of the seized drugs is Tk 7,42,36,331.
 
The destroyed drugs include:
 
24,756 bottles of foreign liquor, 3,488 bottles of Fensidil, 9,775 kg of cannabis (marijuana), 1,025 cans of beer, and 2,881 pieces of Yaba tablets.
Lieutenant Colonel Md. Tanzilur Rahman emphasized that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is committed to safeguarding the country's borders. Through continuous patrolling, they have been preventing smuggling, human trafficking, and other illegal activities. The BGB follows a ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy towards drug smuggling, which has helped in seizing significant quantities of narcotics.
 
In a new initiative, BGB has started destroying seized cannabis in an eco-friendly manner. Following the guidance of the Department of Environment, cannabis is being buried in a pit mixed with sand and cement, ensuring environmental protection during the disposal process. This new method is a step towards protecting the environment while addressing the drug problem.
 
The commander further stated that strict actions would be taken against individuals involved in drug trafficking and consumption. He stressed that collective efforts from all segments of society are necessary to eradicate drugs.
 
Present at the destruction event were Senior Judicial Magistrate Fakrul Islam, Executive Magistrate Susmita Saha, Assistant Director of the Department of Narcotics Control Sajidur Rahman, Assistant Director of the Department of Environment Haripad Das, as well as representatives from various local press clubs, and journalists from print and electronic media.
