Rajshahi, Jan 31 (V7N) – The Rajshahi student society, which played a key role in the July Uprising, has issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the cancellation of the newly formed Rajshahi district and metropolitan committees of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The protestors claim that the committees failed to include the "real renegades" who actively participated in the uprising.
At a press conference held at Saheb Bazar Zero Point on Friday morning, student leaders strongly criticized the committee formation process, calling it a "farcical pocket committee" dominated by infiltrators. They also declared Mahin Sarkar, the central coordinator, and Salauddin Ammar, the Rajshahi University coordinator, as 'undesirable' figures.
Students Reject Committee, Demand Representation
In a written statement, student leader Zubair Rashid expressed deep frustration, stating,
"Like the rest of the country, Rajshahi students also shed their blood in the July Revolution. However, we are disheartened to see that a vested group has excluded the real heroes of the movement and instead handed over leadership to those who only benefited after August 5."
The announcement of the Rajshahi district and metropolitan committees on Thursday (January 30) by the central convening committee has sparked widespread criticism and unrest among student activists. Many believe that the new leadership does not represent the true spirit of the movement and was formed to serve the interests of a select few.
Growing Criticism and Potential Escalation
With tensions rising, students have warned of intensified protests if their demand is not met within the given deadline. The ultimatum signals a potential rift within the anti-discrimination student movement, raising concerns about internal divisions and leadership legitimacy.
The coming hours will be crucial in determining whether the central committee responds to the students' demand or if the movement in Rajshahi takes a more confrontational turn.
