Saint Martin’s, Feb 01 (V7N) — The government has imposed a nine-month ban on tourist entry to Saint Martin’s Island, effective from Saturday, February 1. Cruise ships and other tourist transportation services to the coral island will also be suspended during this period.

Authorities stated that the decision aims to protect the island’s fragile ecosystem and biodiversity. The Department of Environment has planned a month-long conservation program during the tourism ban. The initiative includes dividing the island into zones for systematic cleaning, removing plastic waste, and launching a special project to provide pure drinking water. Additionally, efforts will be made to generate electricity from waste, while awareness campaigns will educate local residents on environmental protection.

A meeting has been scheduled for February 2 to discuss further measures.

Local business owners have expressed concerns over the economic impact of the ban, as Saint Martin’s Island is home to 230 hotels, resorts, cottages, and restaurants that rely on tourism. They urge the government to introduce alternative income sources for affected residents.
