Rajbari, Mar 25 (V7N) – A massive 28.5 kg cuttlefish was caught in a fisherman’s net in the Padma River near Daulatdia in Goalanda Upazila, Rajbari. The rare catch was later sold for Tk 70,000 in Gulshan, Dhaka.
The cuttlefish was caught early Tuesday morning by Shawkat Haldar and his team near ferry pier number 7, at the confluence of the Padma and Jamuna rivers. Shawkat recounted how they had cast their net in the deep waters of the river, and after a long wait, they were surprised to find the giant cuttlefish trapped inside. The fish was then taken to Anu Khan's shop near ferry pier number 5 for weighing, where it was found to be 28 kg 500 grams.
Shahjahan Sheikh, owner of Shakil Sohan Fish Shop, won the open auction for the fish, purchasing it for Tk 67,200 at Tk 2,400 per kg. Later, after posting about the catch on Facebook, a businessman from Gulshan, Dhaka, purchased the fish for Tk 70,000, paying Tk 2,500 per kg.
According to Rajbari District Fisheries Officer Md. Nazmul Huda, the confluence of the Padma and Jamuna rivers provides an ideal environment for large fish due to the abundance of food and deep water zones. He credited government regulations for preserving the river’s fish population, ensuring that such large catches remain a source of joy and livelihood for local fishermen.
