Pabna, July 14 (V7N) – Shariful Islam Tuhin, the former General Secretary of the Ishwardi Upazila Jubo Dal and ex-Chairman of Dasuria Union Parishad, was released from Pabna District Jail on Monday after serving 22 years in prison for a murder case. He was freed at approximately 10:45 AM, greeted by thousands of party supporters who showered him with flowers as they welcomed his return.

Following his release, supporters organized a procession, taking him to the district BNP office, where he was warmly received with floral tributes. There, speeches were delivered by Habibur Rahman Habib, the Convener of Pabna District BNP, and Shariful Islam Tuhin himself. Several key figures were present at the event, including Abdus Samad Khan Montu (Senior Joint Convener), Advocate Masud Khandakar (Member Secretary), and other prominent leaders.

Tuhin, accompanied by his supporters, was later taken in a convoy to his home in Ishwardi, where he was honored at a reception organized by the Upazila and Municipality BNP at the Central Bus Terminal.

Background of the Case

Tuhin was convicted in 2003 for his alleged involvement in a murder case, which he claimed was politically motivated. Along with several other Jubo Dal leaders, he was framed by a vested group and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, in a major development earlier this year, the Ministry of Home Affairs, through a gazette notification in April, announced the suspension of his sentence, among others, paving the way for his release after serving 22 years.

Post-Release Statement

After his release, Tuhin expressed his relief and gratitude, stating, “I was falsely implicated in a politically motivated murder case, with the intention of using me for political advantage. Although late, I am now free and excited to be back. I thank the leaders of Ishwardi and the district BNP for their unwavering support, and I am determined to work for the people alongside the party in the future.”

Political Impact

Habibur Rahman Habib, the district BNP chief, remarked that Tuhin's release would significantly strengthen the Ishwardi Upazila BNP, making the party more organized and determined. He further criticized political opponents, emphasizing that no one has the right to insult figures like President Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, or Tarique Rahman, adding that anyone trying to undermine the BNP will have to face consequences in Bangladeshi politics.

Celebration and Community Support

The news of Tuhin's release has sparked widespread celebrations in the local community. Supporters have put up posters and banners in various places around Ishwardi, congratulating their leader. On Sunday, July 13, jubilant party workers held processions and distributed sweets in honor of his freedom.
