JHALOKATHI, Aug 02 (V7N) — A government post office in Kathalia Upazila of southern Bangladesh is operating from a severely deteriorated building, raising concerns over the safety of employees and visitors.
The building, constructed in 1992, has developed extensive structural damage over the years. Sections of plaster have fallen from the walls and ceiling, exposed reinforcing bars are visible, and rainwater leaks through the roof during the monsoon, threatening official documents and disrupting daily operations.
During a recent visit, water was seen accumulating inside the office as rain leaked through the ceiling. Employees continued providing services despite the difficult conditions, while damaged furniture and waterlogged floors further highlighted the building's poor state.
Residents who use the post office said the unsafe conditions create inconvenience and safety risks, particularly during heavy rainfall. They urged the authorities to either renovate the existing building or construct a new facility as soon as possible.
Postmaster Md. Din Islam said staff work under constant concern during the rainy season because of the building's deteriorating condition and the possibility of falling debris.
Kathalia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Makbul Hossain said the matter would be forwarded to the relevant authorities through the district administration, expressing hope that necessary action would be taken to repair or replace the building.
Local residents said the post office continues to play an important role in handling official correspondence and public services. They called for immediate government intervention to prevent potential accidents and ensure a safe working environment for employees and visitors alike.
