Jhalokathi, Oct 04 (V7N) – A 600-metre road in Rajapur upazila of Jhalokathi has deteriorated severely due to years of inadequate maintenance, causing significant hardship for local residents.

The road, stretching from the house of Chhoton Sikdar west of the Bagri Land Office to a Noorani madrasa, is riddled with large potholes and damaged sections.

A visit to the area found numerous potholes across the road, many of them submerged under stagnant rainwater. The hidden potholes have increased the risk of accidents for pedestrians and other road users.

Residents said no effective initiative has been taken to repair the road for a long time, allowing its condition to worsen gradually.

School and madrasa students, children and elderly residents are among those suffering most from the poor condition of the road. Locals also fear that prolonged waterlogging will accelerate further damage to the road.

Khokon Sikdar, a local resident, said the road had been in poor condition for a long time.

“The road becomes waterlogged even after a little rain. It becomes extremely difficult to walk along it,” he said.

Another resident, Biplab Sikdar, said the stagnant dirty water was also creating an unhealthy environment in the area.

“Besides disrupting communication, the stagnant water is creating serious risks for young children travelling to and from the madrasa,” he said.

Local resident Shahid Gazi warned that the situation could become worse during the next monsoon if the road is not repaired soon.

Residents have demanded immediate reconstruction of the damaged road along with a sustainable drainage system to prevent recurring waterlogging.

They also urged the relevant authorities to inspect the road and take effective measures to end the long-running suffering of the local community.
