Rajshahi June 10,(V7N)- Three rare sucker fish were caught in a pond in Bagha, Rajshahi. On Saturday evening, June 8, the fish were found in the pond of Jamir Uddin in Digha Naodapara village, Bausa Union.

Regarding the matter, pond owner Jamir Uddin said that native species such as rui, katla, tilapia, mrigal, and small river fish were released into the small pond near his house. On Saturday evening, a net was cast to catch some fish. At that time, three rare fish were caught in the net. Seeing such unfamiliar fish left me astonished. Later, others identified the fish as 'sucker fish.'

The fish have elongated bodies with spines, no scales, and large mouths. Their bodies are black with yellow markings. The total weight of the three fish is about one kilogram. Upazila Fisheries Officer Sahadul Islam said that these are predatory sucker mouth catfish.

These predatory fish are undoubtedly a threat to native species. They consume local fish in any water body or river they inhabit. These fish can survive in polluted water. They have many bones and little meat, so people do not eat them. Sucker fish are banned, and if found, they should be buried to be destroyed.
