At least nine people have been killed in a road accident after a microbus carrying a wedding party plunged into a canal after a bridge collapse in Amtali, Barguna.

The accident took place on a bridge connecting Naura and Haludia Bazar around 2pm on Saturday, said Amtali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shakhawat Hossain Tipu.

Nine bodies have been recovered from the microbus. The identities of the deceased are not yet known.

The death toll may increase, the OC said, adding that the microbus is still under water.

He said that the police, fire service, and local residents are continuing the rescue operations.

Local residents reported that the bridge was quite old and had not been repaired for a long time.
