Benapole, Sep 10 (V7N) – To combat the rising prices of chicken eggs in Bangladesh, 231,040 eggs were imported from India through the Benapole land port on Monday. Masudur Rahman, the revenue officer of the Benapole Customs' check post cargo branch, confirmed that the eggs will be released after necessary examinations.

This follows a previous import of 61,950 eggs on November 5 last year. According to customs sources, the total value of this shipment is USD 11,272, with a dozen eggs costing USD 1.56. Based on current exchange rates and customs duties, the cost of each egg to Bangladeshi consumers will be around BDT 7 to BDT 7.5.

Hydro Land Solutions, a Dhaka-based company, imported the eggs, which were supplied by Shree Lakshmi Enterprises of India. The local C&F agent, Ratul Enterprises, has already submitted the necessary documentation for customs clearance.

Abdul Latif, owner of Ratul Enterprises, emphasized the need for continued egg imports to stabilize the volatile market. "Egg imports have already started through Benapole, and more shipments will help reduce the high prices," he said.

The Benapole Animal Husbandry Department confirmed that the clearance process will rely on the certification provided by Indian authorities, as they lack egg testing facilities locally. If any issues are visibly detected, further investigations will be carried out.

In response to rising egg prices in mid-2023, the Ministry of Commerce capped the retail price of eggs at BDT 12 each. However, the market price remained uncontrollable. As a corrective measure, 15 companies were authorized to import 1.5 billion eggs, although a significant portion of that allowance has yet to arrive in Bangladesh.
