Sunamganj, Sep 12 (V7N) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized a total of 895 kg of hilsa fish being smuggled to India through the borders of Comilla and Sunamganj on Wednesday.

The BGB headquarters confirmed that 620 kg of hilsa was confiscated at the Burichong border in Comilla, while another 275 kg was seized from the Doarabazar border in Sunamganj.

BGB Sultanpur Battalion (60 BGB) captain, Lt. Colonel AM Jaber bin Jabbar, acted on intelligence from civil sources that a shipment of hilsa was hidden in the hills near the Anandpur area, on the Burichong border of Comilla. Following this, a team led by BOP Habildar Md. Masudur Rahman raided the location and recovered 620 kg of hilsa packed in 31 cocksheet boxes.

In a separate incident on Wednesday morning, BGB Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB) captain, Lt. Colonel Md. Hafizur Rahman, received information about a consignment of hilsa being smuggled into India through the Banglabazar border of Sunamganj's Doarabazar upazila. A BGB patrol team, led by Subedar Abul Bashar of the Banglabazar BOP, conducted a raid at Ghilatali along the border and seized 275 kg of hilsa fish.

Banglabazar camp commander Subedar Abul Bashar Azad said, "We have increased our vigilance to prevent smugglers from conducting illegal activities through the border. Our operations will continue to combat smuggling."

The seized hilsa is now under BGB custody as further investigations are underway.
