Tangail, Oct 12 (V7N) — Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), located near Tangail city, celebrates its 25th anniversary today, marking 25 years of contributions to science, technology, and education in Bangladesh. The university was established in memory of the visionary leader Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and Pir Shah-Zaman of Kashmir.
History and Establishment:
MBSTU is not a traditional institution; its roots trace back to 1957 when Mawlana Bhashani envisioned an educational institution that would provide modern, work-oriented education to uplift the poor and marginalized. His dream was realized when the foundation stone of the university was laid by the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on October 12, 1999. The university officially commenced its academic activities in 2003 with the launch of two departments under the Faculty of Engineering.
Academic Growth:
MBSTU began with 75 students and 5 teachers and has since grown to offer degrees in over 20 subjects under 7 faculties . Today, it is home to more than 6,000 students . The university has expanded beyond traditional subjects, introducing programs like Criminology and Police Science , making it a pioneer in the field of criminology education in Bangladesh.
Campus Infrastructure:
The university boasts a well-equipped campus with 3 academic buildings , 2 administrative buildings , and 7 student halls . Facilities include a modern medical center , a five-story central library , and cafeteria services . For faculty and staff, MBSTU offers residential quarters and a guest house. Additionally, the campus is home to historical landmarks like Mawlana Bhashani's Durbar Hall and Pir Shahzaman Dighi , which continue to attract visitors.
Cultural and Social Contributions:
MBSTU hosts numerous cultural and literary organizations that contribute to the vibrant student life on campus. Prominent groups include the MBSTU Debating Society , Film Society , Science Club , and Leo Club , among others. These organizations reflect the university's commitment to fostering an inclusive, creative environment for students.
Research Excellence:
MBSTU has made significant strides in research, ranking 1st among science and technology universities in Bangladesh according to the Simago Institute and 3rd in the WebMetrics Ranking-2024. The university is also proud to have 175 researchers, teachers, and students listed among the world's top researchers by the Alper Dogger (AD) Scientific Index . Alumni have made their mark globally, with former students working at NASA and Google .
Vision for the Future:
In a statement on the university’s 25th anniversary, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Azim Akhand shared his vision for MBSTU's future. "We aim to create a student-friendly and modern academic environment," he said. "As a science and technology university, our focus will be on research that addresses national issues while enhancing the infrastructure for students."
As MBSTU enters its 26th year, it stands as a symbol of innovation, dedication, and academic excellence, continuing to inspire future generations of leaders and thinkers.
