Khulna, Feb 22 (V7N) – A faction of students at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) locked the Vice-Chancellor's (VC) residence on Friday night, demanding his immediate resignation. They also rejected the university syndicate’s latest decision and vowed to continue their movement.
The protesting students submitted a letter to Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, seeking the removal of VC Prof. Dr. Mohammad Masud and Pro-VC Prof. Dr. Shariful Islam. They denied allegations of harassing the VC, calling it "false propaganda" and claimed that there is no evidence of any physical assault.
Additionally, the students alleged that despite a syndicate decision to ban student politics, political activities continued on campus, and they demanded strict enforcement of this policy.
In response, the Kuet Teachers’ Association President Prof. Dr. Saidur Rahman and General Secretary Prof. Faruk Hossain expressed regret over the incidents. They cautioned that forcing the VC and Pro-VC to resign could set a negative precedent for the institution.
The ongoing student protests stem from a violent clash on February 18 between so-called general students and Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists over the distribution of nomination forms. At least 50 students were injured, and local outsiders allegedly joined the clashes.
Following the violence, the university's emergency syndicate meeting suspended academic activities until February 28. However, tensions continue to rise, with students determined to press forward with their demands.
