Dhaka, Sept 9 (V7N) – This year’s 38th Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election is drawing attention not only for its scale but also for its diversity. Nearly 40,000 students will vote on Tuesday in what many describe as the most inclusive DUCSU election in recent history.
One of the most notable features is the strong participation of women candidates. Contesting for positions including vice president (VP) and general secretary (GS), female students have emerged as serious contenders, signaling a shift in the traditionally male-dominated student politics of Bangladesh. The university’s largest hall, Rokeya Hall, alone accounts for more than 5,600 voters, underscoring the growing importance of women in shaping campus leadership.
The election also reflects Bangladesh’s broader political diversity. Student panels backed by BNP, Jamaat, Chatra Odhikar Parishad, Islami Chatra Andolon, leftist alliances, and independents are competing for 41 central posts and 234 hall posts. This mix has brought vibrant debates on issues ranging from education reforms and student welfare to social justice and women’s empowerment.
Observers note that the combination of strong female representation and competing ideological groups is a healthy development for campus democracy. It demonstrates that Dhaka University, often seen as a microcosm of the nation’s politics, continues to evolve in response to changing social and political dynamics.
The outcome of today’s election will not only decide student leadership but also serve as an indicator of how diversity and inclusivity are reshaping political participation in Bangladesh’s next generation.
