Dhaka, Sep 15 (V7N)- The tenure of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and hall unions ends today, with DUCSU Vice President (VP) Sadik Kayem demanding that the schedule for the next DUCSU election be announced on Tuesday.
He made the demand Monday night (September 14) at a representative conference held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium to mark the conclusion of the current DUCSU and hall union terms.
Sadik Kayem said the current DUCSU had initially sought to incorporate the union election into the university's academic calendar after assuming office. He urged the administration to take necessary steps to ensure continuity of DUCSU elections.
He highlighted the elimination of guestroom practices, torture and forced occupation of residential seats as major achievements of the current union. These practices had previously caused serious problems for students at the university.
Kayem said the campus is now safer for students and called on the university authorities to ensure that the “gonoroom” (mass dormitory) and “guestroom” cultures never return to Dhaka University.
The DUCSU VP also alleged that the university administration had obstructed efforts related to student welfare. He claimed that the administration had yet to provide an account of DUCSU funds and alleged that money allocated for student welfare had been diverted to other sectors.
Earlier, representatives of the hall unions presented reports on various development activities carried out in their respective halls during their tenure.
