Dhaka, Mar 14 (V7N) – Former Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique was laid to rest next to his parents' graves at Azimpur Graveyard on Friday (March 14) afternoon. His students, colleagues, and well-wishers attended his funeral.
Earlier, three separate funeral prayers were held for him:
- At Al-Aqsa Mosque, near his Green Road residence, at 11 AM.
- At Dhanmondi Eidgah Ground after Jumma prayers.
- At Eidgah Ground Mosque after Jumma prayers.
Among those attending were Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, along with former and current teachers and students.
Despite his long tenure at Dhaka University, his body was not taken to the campus, a decision made by his family, according to VC Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan. However, students and well-wishers expressed disappointment, stating that the university lost an opportunity to honor him properly.
Professor Arefin Siddique passed away at 10:45 PM on Thursday (March 13) while undergoing treatment at the Neuroscience Unit of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in Dhaka. He was being treated for a stroke and brain hemorrhage.
- Appointed as 27th Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University on January 15, 2009, by then President Iajuddin Ahmed.
- Served as VC until September 4, 2017, then rejoined the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism as a professor.
- Retired from teaching in June 2020.
- Chairman of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) from 1997 to 2000 and again from July 15, 2020.
- Chairman of DU Mass Communication and Journalism Department (1993-1996).
- Dhaka University Teachers' Association Leadership:
- Joint Secretary (1991)
- General Secretary (1994, 1996)
- President (2004, 2005)
In 2011-2012, Professor Arefin Siddique was awarded the ‘Order of Civil Merit’ by the King of Spain, recognizing his contributions to women's development, women's education, and social progress.
His contributions to education, media, and social development leave behind a lasting legacy.
