Dhaka, Mar 20 (V7N) – Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has stated that national unity is the path all political parties must choose to ensure democratic stability in Bangladesh. He made this remark while speaking to reporters on Thursday (March 20).

Addressing the ongoing debate on state reform, Professor Riaz emphasized that the need for reform arises from the consequences of authoritarian rule. He accused dictators of deliberately destroying the democratic structure of state institutions, warning that if this trend continues, democracy in Bangladesh will be in grave danger.

He stressed that structural reforms are the only way to establish an accountable state system. According to him, the demand for state reform is not just a political agenda but a necessity for citizens who seek a fair and just governance system. If fundamental changes are not made and the current constitutional framework remains unchanged, the country's democratic future will remain at risk.

Professor Riaz also criticized the electoral process in recent years, calling the last three national elections a farce. He noted that the push for reforms is not just coming from the interim government but also from civil society, which is actively demanding structural changes. He highlighted that, for the first time, an opportunity has emerged to create a broad consensus on constitutional and state reforms by incorporating the voices of civil society into the national dialogue.

As the country moves forward, the success of democratic reforms will depend on collective action and political will. Professor Riaz urged all stakeholders to come together to safeguard democracy and ensure a transparent and accountable governance system for Bangladesh.
