Ahead of the vibrant Pahela Boishakh celebrations, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman assured the public of comprehensive security measures while addressing the media after inspecting security arrangements at Ramna Botmul on Saturday morning.
Commissioner Habibur Rahman emphasized that while there is no specific threat of attack during the Pahela Boishakh New Year celebration, the security plan has been meticulously crafted, drawing from past incidents. He highlighted the significance of Pahela Boishakh as an embodiment of the non-communal spirit of Bengali culture, acknowledging that such events have been targeted by terrorists in the past.
With festivities set to unfold across Dhaka, including Suhrawardy Udyan, Ramna Park, Dhaka University, and other prominent venues, Commissioner Habibur Rahman outlined the robust security arrangements in place. These include surveillance through CCTV cameras and drones, deployment of watch towers, and thorough sweeps by Special Branch personnel and the DMP's dog squad.
In anticipation of increased traffic and footfall, diversions will be implemented in key areas for traffic control and safety. Notably, entry into the Ramna area will be restricted after 5 pm, with all events required to conclude before evening, in adherence to government-set deadlines for security reasons.
Responding to queries regarding post-5 pm events, Commissioner Habibur Rahman emphasized the importance of respecting government directives for the safety of all attendees.
To ensure the well-being of tourists, a dedicated presence of tourist police teams, lake naval police teams, medical teams, and lost and found centers will be established on-site. Additionally, the DMP will provide free drinking water and set up blood donation booths, reaffirming their commitment to a safe and enjoyable celebration of Pahela Boishakh for all.
