Dhaka, Oct 02 (V7N): The government has suspended Dr. Zubaida Rahman's one-year jail sentence on the condition that she files an appeal after surrendering in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Dr. Zubaida is the wife of BNP's acting chairman, Tarique Rahman.

A circular issued today by the Ministry of Home Affairs, signed by Deputy Secretary Md. Abu Sayed Molla, confirmed the decision. The suspension was granted under Section 401 (1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, following an application by Zubaida Rahman and with approval from the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs.

In August of last year, a Dhaka court sentenced Zubaida Rahman to three years in prison, while her husband, Tarique Rahman, was sentenced to nine years in absentia. The case, lodged by the ACC in 2007, accused the couple of amassing illegal assets.

Zubaida Rahman’s mother, Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, was also implicated in the case, which involved the accumulation of Tk 4.82 crore in illegal assets and concealing Tk 2.16 crore in wealth statements.
