Dhaka, Nov 06 (V7N) — Amir Hossain Amu, a senior leader of the Awami League and former industries minister, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police on Wednesday afternoon in the capital's Dhanmondi area.
Rezaul Karim Mallick, Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Intelligence, confirmed the arrest, stating that multiple cases have been filed against Amu. He will be shown arrested in stages, and a remand application will be submitted after he is handed over to the court.
Amu, who is currently the coordinator and spokesperson of the Awami League-led 14-party grand alliance, had faced significant political and financial challenges after the shift in political dynamics on August 5. His bank account was frozen on August 18, along with the suspension of transactions linked to his family members and their businesses.
Amu, an elected member of parliament from Jhalakathi, has faced intense public scrutiny, especially after a mob set fire to his house in Jhalakathi following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government.
This development marks another chapter in the politically charged atmosphere as various leaders face legal and political pressures.
