Bhola, Feb 08, (V7N) — On the evening of Friday, February 7, around 7:30 PM, a mob attacked the home of Rofiqul Islam, the General Secretary of the Awami League in Borhanuddin Upazila and the former mayor of Borhanuddin Municipality. The attack occurred at his residence on Joy Road in Ward 2 of the municipality, where the crowd vandalized the property and set it on fire.
Local sources report that Rofiqul Islam, who is the nephew of former Minister and Awami League Advisory Council member Tofail Ahmed and the brother-in-law of former MP Ali Azam Mukul, had established significant political influence in the area during the tenure of the Awami League government. He allegedly built a stronghold of power across the Upazila, using his political connections.
Rofiqul, while serving as the mayor of Borhanuddin Municipality, is accused by locals of widespread corruption and irregularities, allegedly influenced by the power of Tofail Ahmed and Ali Azam Mukul.
Several anonymous sources shared that many leaders and activists of the Awami League were unhappy with Rofiqul Islam due to his actions. The attack, vandalism, and arson are believed to be an expression of long-standing frustration and anger against him. However, it was reported that no one was at the house at the time of the attack.
