Dhaka, Apr 27 (V7N) — The Election Commission (EC) has officially declared BNP leader Engineer Ishraq Hossain as the new mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), issuing a gazette notification on Sunday (April 27).

Ishraq Hossain, the son of former BNP Vice Chairman late Sadeq Hossain Khoka, becomes the latest BNP figure to assume mayoral responsibility. Earlier, BNP leader Shahadat Hossain of the Chittagong City Corporation was also declared mayor following a court verdict, and currently serves as the only city corporation mayor from the BNP.

The elections for the Dhaka North and South City Corporations were held on February 1, 2020. In those polls, Awami League candidates Atiqul Islam (North) and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh (South) were elected mayors, with Taposh receiving 424,595 votes and Ishraq securing 236,512 votes.

Following the election, Ishraq Hossain filed a case in court alleging widespread rigging and irregularities. Although the Election Commission had published the election gazette on February 2, 2020, Atiqul and Taposh served as mayors after taking their oaths.

However, after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5 last year, both were removed from office, paving the way for the new appointments.
