Dhaka, Aug 06 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has officially welcomed the July Declaration and the announcement of the national election timeline, expressing gratitude to Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus for fulfilling his commitments. The reaction came shortly after the Chief Advisor’s national address on Tuesday night (August 5).
In an immediate statement, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed hailed the Chief Advisor’s declaration as a turning point for political stability in the country.
“The Chief Advisor’s announcement to formally send a letter to the Election Commission will remove all lingering uncertainty regarding the upcoming election. This step will restore confidence in the economy, boost trade and investment, and ensure a stable political climate,” Salahuddin stated.
He further emphasized the importance of following the Chief Advisor’s guidance to maintain a peaceful and participatory election environment in the coming months.
BNP to Give Constitutional Status to July Declaration
In a significant policy statement, Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed that BNP is committed to giving both state and constitutional recognition to the July Declaration, which was formally read out earlier in the day by Dr. Yunus at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building.
“The July Declaration will be enshrined in its rightful place in the Constitution. We are also pleased that the martyrs of the July Uprising have been recognized as national heroes. This recognition was one of our core demands,” he added.
Support for the Injured and Affected
The BNP leader expressed satisfaction that legal and state support had been promised for those injured and affected during the July Movement.
“This is a long-awaited step toward justice and rehabilitation,” he said, noting that the announcement reflects a government willing to correct historical wrongs.
Charter of Consensus Imminent
Salahuddin also revealed that the July Charter—a national consensus document expected to shape the transitional roadmap—will be signed “very soon” by all stakeholders.
Election Before Ramadan
In his national address, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus reiterated that national elections would be held before Ramadan, with February 26, 2026 proposed as a likely date. Ramadan is expected to begin around February 17, depending on moon sighting.
