SYLHET, July 31 (V7N) — National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Thursday accused political rivals of using the legacy of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia to justify what he described as terrorism and land grabbing, while calling for democracy, justice and political reforms.
Speaking at a public rally in Kanaighat, Sylhet, as part of the NCP's "July March" programme, Nahid said the party respects both Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia but would not accept criminal activities carried out in their names.
"We respect Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia. But we will not accept terrorism, land grabbing or the occupation of public property under the banner of their names or images," he said.
Referring to the previous Awami League government, Nahid alleged that politics had been exploited in the name of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman over the past 16 years and urged an end to what he called similar political practices associated with Ziaur Rahman.
He also called for the protection of freedom of expression, employment opportunities, access to food, institutional reforms and the rule of law.
Addressing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Nahid criticised recent attacks on NCP activists and alleged that a college student had lost an eye in an assault carried out by supporters of a BNP leader in Habiganj. He urged the government to ensure justice and said the incident had raised serious concerns about political violence.
Nahid further warned against alleged electoral manipulation in future local government elections, claiming that armed groups and political intimidation could be used to influence the vote. He said the NCP would oppose any attempt to undermine the democratic process.
The rally was also addressed by NCP leaders Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, Nasiruddin Patwari, Dr. Atik Mujahid and Dr. Mahmuda Mitu.
The allegations made by Nahid Islam could not be independently verified, and no immediate response from the BNP was available.
