Dhaka, Sep 22 (V7N)- BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused an opposition party of using its long-march programme to create confusion among the public instead of highlighting the impact of the global crisis on rising fuel prices.
Rizvi made the remarks on Tuesday (September 22) afternoon at a discussion meeting at the National Press Club.
He said opposition parties have the democratic right to hold programmes both inside and outside parliament and claimed that the government has not obstructed their political activities.
According to Rizvi, however, the opposition is misleading the public by failing to acknowledge the impact of the international situation on the country's energy and fuel crisis.
The government raised fuel prices from September 21, fixing diesel at Tk 135 per litre, petrol at Tk 160, octane at Tk 165 and kerosene at Tk 155. The government has attributed the adjustment to changes in the international market situation.
Rizvi also referred to the recent incident at Rajshahi Railway Station, describing the attack there as an unprecedented incident carried out by members of what he called a clandestine organisation. He also criticised Jamaat-e-Islami, alleging that the party has repeatedly deceived the public.
Speaking about the country's financial situation, Rizvi said foreign exchange reserves have increased since the government took office, which he said has helped the government manage the ongoing crisis to some extent.
He expressed hope that public difficulties would ease once the global crisis subsides.
Rizvi has previously said the current energy crisis was linked to the international situation, including the conflict in the Middle East and disruptions affecting fuel supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
