Dhaka, Sep 12 (V7N) – The medical board is currently assessing the health condition of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to arrange for her timely transfer abroad for advanced treatment.

Khaleda Zia’s personal physician, Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, informed journalists at BNP’s Naya Paltan central office on Thursday that Zia has been under treatment at Evercare Hospital for 479 days. She returned home on August 21 but was readmitted to the hospital early Thursday. Dr. Zahid emphasized that a medical opinion on her fitness is crucial for her potential travel abroad.

“Assessing her physical readiness to endure the journey is essential before any flight,” Dr. Zahid explained, noting that this matter is grounded in medical and scientific considerations rather than mere storytelling.

In light of these factors, both local and international members of the medical board are deliberating on the urgent measures needed to facilitate her transfer to a more advanced medical facility overseas.

Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital early Thursday morning from her residence in Gulshan, as reported by BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan. She had previously returned home on August 21 after a 45-day stay at the hospital. She had been admitted on July 8, shortly after being discharged with various health issues.

A team of specialists, led by Prof. Shahabuddin Talukder, successfully implanted a pacemaker in Zia’s chest on June 23. She has been struggling with multiple health problems, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, and complications related to her kidneys, lungs, heart, and eyes.

Since her liver cirrhosis diagnosis in November 2021, her doctors have recommended overseas treatment. Last year, three U.S. specialists performed a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure to manage fluid accumulation and bleeding in her liver.

Khaleda Zia was imprisoned on February 8, 2018, following a five-year sentence in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case, which was later extended to 10 years by the High Court. She was also convicted in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government temporarily released her from jail on March 25, 2020, with conditions including confinement to her Gulshan home and a ban on leaving the country. On August 6, President Mohammed Shahabuddin issued an order under Article 49 of the constitution, granting her release from jail, allowing her to stay at home.
