Sunamganj, Sep 20 (V7N) – Former Planning Minister and Awami League Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunamganj-3 constituency, MA Mannan, has been arrested by the police. He was taken into custody from his residence in Shantiganj upazila on Thursday night around 10:30 pm.

Sunamganj Superintendent of Police, AFM Anwar Hossain Khan, confirmed the arrest, stating that MA Mannan was apprehended in connection with a specific case. Currently, the former minister is being held at the Sadar police station and is expected to be presented in court for remand.

The arrest follows a case registered at Sunamganj Sadar Model Police Station related to an attack on students during a protest led by the anti-discrimination student movement on August 4 in Sunamganj. The case, filed on September 2 under the Speedy Trial Act by a man named Hafiz Ahmad, accuses 99 individuals, including MA Mannan. It mentions that the plaintiff's brother, Zahoor Ahmad, was injured in the attack.

This development comes in the wake of significant political upheaval in Bangladesh. On August 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid widespread protests, with a popular uprising led by the anti-discrimination student movement. Since then, authorities have arrested 32 high-profile figures, including ministers, parliamentarians, and top leaders of the Awami League government.
