Puthia, July 11 (V7N) – The historic Baneshwar Hat in Puthia, Rajshahi, has become a haven for filth and foul smells, severely impacting both vendors and customers. Despite generating millions in revenue every year, no substantial development initiatives have been taken by the authorities to address the market’s deteriorating condition.
Unsanitary Conditions in the Market
Meat vendor Malek Ali expressed his frustration, saying, “Right next to the market is a garbage dump. The stench is unbearable, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to do business. There's no proper drainage system for the fish and meat market. The water from the fish and blood from slaughtered animals accumulate, creating a horrible smell around the area. We’ve been working like this for a long time.”
Fish seller Elias Hossain echoed similar sentiments: “The fish market has turned into a garbage pit. During the dry season, it’s manageable, but in the rainy season, contaminated water spreads all over the market. The smell and presence of insects drive customers away. I have raised the issue multiple times, but the market authorities haven’t taken any action.”
Concerns from Customers
Aslam, a regular customer, complained about the market's condition, saying, “The environment of Baneshwar Hat is extremely filthy. It’s impossible to even enter the market because of the unbearable stench. I’ve heard the market was leased for 6 crore Taka and there’s 9-10 crore Taka in the bank, yet no development has taken place.”
Another customer, Sabuj Ali, pointed out the market’s long-standing issues: “The situation has been like this for years. During the dry season, it’s difficult but manageable. However, during the monsoon, the market floods, bringing in a mix of foul smell and insects that affect everyone. Business is suffering because of this.”
Lack of Oversight Despite High Revenues
Matiur Rahman Moti, president of the Baneshwar Market Business Association, said, “This market is well-known for its mangoes, dates, vegetables, cattle, and household goods. Every year, we lease the market for several crores, but there is no proper oversight. The Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) has given repeated assurances, but no real steps have been taken yet.”
Authorities' Response and Future Plans
In response to the concerns, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Puthia, AKM Nur Hossain Nirjor, acknowledged the problem and outlined future plans. “The lack of proper drainage is one of the primary reasons for the filthy conditions. We have already initiated plans to install a drainage system, and work will begin soon. In addition, we will build tin-shed roofs in the vegetable, fish, and meat areas, repair the closed drainage system, and address other issues swiftly.”
The authorities are hoping these interventions will improve the market environment, benefiting both traders and consumers in the long run.
