Members of the Sheikh family, including Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, fled the country following the recent political crisis. The whereabouts of other family members and key party figures remain uncertain as they go into hiding or seek refuge abroad.
In the wake of the recent political upheaval and the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, members of the Sheikh family and key Awami League figures have gone into hiding or fled the country!
Dhaka, Aug 20 (V7N) - In July, the country experienced intense turmoil due to the quota reform movement. Students took to the streets to protest the government's job reservation system.
The then Awami League government responded by using force, including firing on the protesters, which led to numerous casualties. Although the government eventually backed down, the students' demands evolved into a call for the government's resignation. On August 5th, facing public fury, Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India. Following this, various party ministers, MPs, and other leaders either fled the country or went into hiding.
In light of this situation, there is considerable interest in the whereabouts of Awami League members and the Sheikh family. It is known that most political members of the Sheikh family have left the country before or after August 5th. On August 5th, Sheikh Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, departed the country on a military plane. At that time, no other family members were in the country.
Sheikh Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, is currently in the United States. Her daughter, Saima Wazed, is working as the Regional Director of the World Health Organization in Delhi, where she met with her mother and aunt after the government’s fall. Sheikh Rehana's daughter, Tulip Siddiq, a British minister, resides in London. Sheikh Rehana's son, Radwan Siddiq, was not in the country during the government's downfall.
On August 3rd, another member of the Bangabandhu family, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, left the country on a Bangladesh Biman flight from Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh's elder brother, Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Chairman of the Awami Jubo League, is not clearly accounted for, as it is uncertain whether he is abroad or still in the country. According to a Jubo League leader, Fazle Shams Parash had traveled abroad at some point during the protests.
In contrast, Awami League Presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim was unable to leave the country. Abdul Hasanat Abdullah, a significant leader from the Bangabandhu family and a Barisal resident, has gone to India with his younger son. His other son, former Barisal City Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah, and his younger brother, the current Mayor of Barisal City Serniabat Abul Khair Abdullah, are reportedly hiding in the country.
Former MP Sheikh Helal from Bagerhat-1 had left the country before the government's downfall. His son, Sheikh Sharhan Naser Tonmoy, former MP from Bagerhat-2, could not escape and is currently in hiding at a friend’s house in Gulshan 2, Dhaka. Sheikh Helal's brother, Sheikh Salauddin Jewel, a former MP from Khulna-2, is said to be in Tungipara following the government’s fall.
