Dhaka, Sep 22 (V7N) – Several regions across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, are currently experiencing mild to severe heatwaves, heightening discomfort for the public. According to the Meteorological Department, there is little chance of relief from the heat unless there is substantial rainfall.

The intense discomfort is being driven by the high "feels like" temperature in the capital, which is significantly affected by humidity levels in the air.

As of 2 pm on Sunday, a Google search from the Panthapath area of Dhaka showed the actual temperature at 36°C, but the "feels like" temperature reached a stifling 49°C. This extreme heat has caused difficulties for city residents, especially those commuting to work or school, as well as outdoor laborers.

The "feels like" temperature reflects the sensation of heat felt outdoors and is influenced by environmental factors such as air temperature, humidity, and wind speed. Meteorologists clarify that this perceived temperature often feels hotter than the actual air temperature due to these conditions.

In urban areas, such as Dhaka, factors like heavy traffic and industrial activities further increase the perceived temperature, making it higher than in rural areas where greenery and water bodies help cool the environment.

The Meteorological Department classifies heatwaves based on the following scale: a mild heatwave is between 36°C and 38°C, a moderate heatwave is 38°C to 40°C, a severe heatwave is 40°C to 42°C, and temperatures exceeding 42°C are classified as extreme heatwaves.
