Miami, Dec 07 (V7N) — Lionel Messi has been crowned Major League Soccer (MLS) Player of the Year after an outstanding debut season with Inter Miami, despite facing injury challenges. In just 19 matches, Messi scored 20 goals and provided 16 assists, earning him the prestigious award and cementing his impact on the league.

Messi joined Inter Miami in June 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, bringing global attention to MLS. His arrival was not only a boost for Inter Miami but also a monumental achievement for the league, competing with Europe’s historic competitions, South American glamour, and the financial allure of the Saudi Pro League.

However, the journey was not without challenges. Messi missed 62 days due to injuries, sidelining him for over three months in 2024. Yet, his on-field brilliance remained unparalleled. Miami, under his leadership, achieved historic milestones, including winning the Supporters' Shield and recording the most points in the club’s MLS history.

Despite these achievements, Messi expressed regret over not securing the league title. Speaking after receiving the award, Messi said:

"I wanted to receive this award in a different situation. Saturday's cup final would have been the perfect opportunity to win the title and celebrate this award. Our dream of winning the MLS league title didn't come true this year, but we'll come back stronger next year."

Messi's selection as the league’s Most Valuable Player was determined by votes from players, media, and clubs. According to MLS, Messi secured 34.43% of the votes, narrowly edging out Cucho Hernandez, who garnered 33.70%.

Messi's recognition as MLS Player of the Year marks a historic first for Inter Miami and adds yet another accolade to the football legend's storied career. As Messi looks ahead, his sights are firmly set on capturing the MLS Cup and continuing his legacy of excellence.
