Dec 13 , (V7N) - Jason Gillespie resigned as head coach of Pakistan's Test team on Thursday, following disagreements with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Despite being appointed in April on a two-year contract, Gillespie chose not to join the squad for their tour of South Africa, citing frustrations over his role and the PCB's management.
This follows a similar situation with former white-ball coach Gary Kirsten, who resigned in October for comparable reasons. The PCB confirmed Gillespie’s departure and appointed Aaqib Javed, a former Pakistan paceman, as interim head coach for the upcoming two-Test series against South Africa, set to start on December 26 in Centurion.
Gillespie’s resignation came after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in September, when they were whitewashed 2-0 by Bangladesh and suffered a heavy defeat in the first Test against England. However, they bounced back to win the next two Tests against England, taking the series 2-1.
Gillespie expressed his frustration publicly, stating that the role was not what he had expected. His departure was also influenced by dissatisfaction with the PCB's decision not to renew the contract of his assistant, Tim Nielsen. Pakistan has had a turbulent coaching history, with six different coaches in the past four years across all formats.
