DHAKA, Dec 29, (V7N) – Bangladesh’s veteran cricketer Tamim Iqbal emphasized the need for players to take responsibility in making the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) a success, alongside efforts by organizers.

Tamim, who led Fortune Barishal to their maiden BPL title last season, highlighted that while organizers can provide top-notch facilities, pitches, and technologies, the onus of delivering high-quality cricket lies on the players.

“How the tournament will unfold depends on the players’ performance. Organizers can ensure great facilities, but the quality of matches – whether we see 200-run thrillers or low-scoring games – depends entirely on us,” Tamim said.

The last few BPL seasons faced criticism for low-scoring games, which frustrated fans. Tamim pointed out that local players must improve their big-hitting abilities to match the evolving demands of T20 cricket.

Fortune Barishal’s Title Defense

Fortune Barishal, under Tamim’s leadership, is set to begin their title defense against Durbar Rajshahi at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday. Tamim expressed confidence in his team, which features a strong blend of youth, experience, and foreign talent.

“Last season, we were under immense pressure, often just one game away from elimination. This year, we are focused solely on winning the title again. Being champions is not guaranteed, but we must give it our best effort,” he said.

Tamim, who returned to cricket after a seven-month hiatus, emphasized his responsibility to the Barishal franchise. “When you play for a franchise, they expect certain performances. My goal is to repay their trust and do my best to retain the title,” he stated.

Focus on the Present

When asked about his potential participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy, Tamim clarified that he has not discussed it with anyone. “At this moment, I am not thinking about the national team,” he said.

Tamim’s focus remains on preparing for and contributing to the BPL. With the tournament set to open with Fortune Barishal’s match against Durbar Rajshahi, all eyes will be on the defending champions to set the tone for a successful season.
