Valencia, Jan 25 (V7N) — In an unprecedented defeat, Brazil suffered a humiliating 6-0 loss to Argentina in the South American Under-20 Championship, marking the worst defeat in Brazil's 71-year history in the tournament.
Argentina's Claudio Echeverri, often dubbed the "new Messi," played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring two goals. Echeverri, who is set to join Manchester City this month, showcased his exceptional talent in a performance that left fans in awe.
The match at Estadio Misael Delgado began with Argentina's dominance. Ian Subiabre opened the scoring in the 6th minute, followed by a second goal from Echeverri just two minutes later. Brazil's woes deepened in the 11th minute when defender Igor Cerro accidentally scored an own goal, giving Argentina a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime.
The second half brought no respite for Brazil as Agustin Ruberto added the fourth goal in the 52nd minute. Two minutes later, Echeverri struck again, extending the lead to 5-0. Santiago Hidalgo sealed Argentina's historic win with a sixth goal in the 78th minute.
This crushing defeat is a major setback for Brazil, the most successful team in the competition with 12 titles. The top four teams from the tournament will secure spots in the Under-20 World Cup in Chile this September. Brazil now faces an uphill battle to qualify, as the top three teams from each group advance to a final round-robin stage to determine the World Cup berths.
Argentina's dominant performance has set the tone for the championship, while Brazil will need to regroup quickly to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
