Lisbon, Jun 11 (V7N) – European football powerhouse Portugal completed their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on a high note after securing a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in their final international friendly match on Wednesday night.
The Portuguese side dominated proceedings from the opening whistle as they looked to build momentum ahead of the tournament. Despite creating several promising opportunities in the first half, veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to convert any of them into goals.
Portugal eventually broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when winger Pedro Neto produced a clinical finish to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Nigeria responded positively after falling behind and managed to restore parity before halftime. In the 37th minute, forward Arokodare Adams capitalized on a defensive lapse to score the equalizer, sending the teams into the break level at 1-1.
Portugal resumed the second half with renewed attacking intent, repeatedly testing the Nigerian defense. Their persistence paid off in the 75th minute when young winger Francisco Conceição found the net with a superb strike to restore Portugal’s advantage.
Nigeria pushed for another equalizer in the closing stages, but the Portuguese defense held firm to secure a 2-1 victory and extend their winning run ahead of the World Cup.
The result provides a timely confidence boost for Portugal as they prepare to begin their World Cup campaign. The Portuguese will open their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey against Republic of the Congo in Houston, United States, on June 17.
