Los Angeles, Jun 13 (V7N) – The United States made a flying start to their FIFA World Cup Group D campaign with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Mauricio Pochettino's side achieved a historic milestone by scoring four goals in a World Cup match for the first time.
The match was played at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday (June 13), with the hosts taking control from the opening stages.
The United States went ahead in the 7th minute when Paraguay midfielder Damian Bobadilla accidentally turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous attack.
The hosts continued to dominate and doubled their advantage in the 31st minute through forward Folarin Balogun. The striker struck again just before halftime, giving the Americans a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
Paraguay managed to pull one back in the 73rd minute through Julio Enciso, raising hopes of a comeback. However, the United States remained in control throughout the second half.
Deep into stoppage time, Giovanni Reyna added another goal to seal a convincing 4-1 victory for the hosts and secure all three points in their opening World Cup fixture.
The United States and Paraguay had previously met only once in World Cup history, during the inaugural tournament in 1930, when the Americans claimed a 3-0 victory. Nearly a century later, the United States once again emerged victorious on football's biggest stage, this time with an even more impressive performance.
